Note: The Vault-Tec Workshop Expansion is DLC add-on for the video game Fallout 4. To use this content the player must already own the base game – Fallout 4 – and then download and install it to that game.

When purchasing this expansion content, please be aware that you MUST buy the version that matches the version of the base game you already own – the PS4 version of this content will NOT work with the Xbox One version and so on.

Vault-Tec Workshop is the fifth add-on expansion for Fallout 4, and the third “workshop” add-on for the game – those being add-ons that while they contain additional story content, also contain substantial new items, objects, and capabilities for the base game as well.

The Vault-Tec Workshop expansion and DLC was released on 26 July 2016 for all platforms via their respective stores, and is free for gamers who own the season pass, but must be purchased by gamers who do not.

While the Vault-Tec Workshop Expansion is legitimately part of the Fallout 4 game and its story – nobody would argue that it is not canon – gamers who are fans of the IOS and Android based mobile game and app will find remarkable similarities and relationships between the VTWS and the mobile game/app Fallout Shelter!

Players who are familiar with that game/app will notice that the expansion bears a number of rather obvious similarities to Fallout Shelter — for example the process of constructing the vault, the need to maintain and expand its community of Vault Dwellers from Wastelanders, and the use of tag lines and quotes that will be very familiar to Fallout Shelter players like the signature quote: “Who do you think would win in a fight, a lumberjack with tentacle arms or a shark riding a unicycle?”

When we arrive at the Vault and manage to get in thanks to our Pip-Boy, we first meet Overseer Valery Barstow as we rescue and release her. It quickly becomes clear that in addition to still being a loyal Vault-Tec employee, Barstow spent most of her life preparing the set of vault experiments she was meant to undertake when the Vault opened – and still means to see those through with your help.

After you rescue her, Barstow decides that you will make an ideal assistant, and thus enlists you to help her to construct and complete the various experiments and tests while you complete the construction of Vault 88 – her Vault. In fact the experiment quests factor significantly in your relationship with Barstow and the rest of the people who you recruit to become Dwellers.

While the function of this expansion is to add a new workshop and new crafting capabilities to the game – and it does accomplish this nicely – what really makes it special is the story that unfolds as you work your way through unlocking all of its different elements and the Vault 88 Construction Zone.

The adventure that begins the Vault-Tec Workshop expansion is triggered automatically once a player has reached Level 20, when they receive an emergency radio broadcast via the radio receiver on their Pip-Boy wrist-attached computing device.

The location of the emergency broadcast signal is at the Quincy Quarries – which is a rock quarry in teh vicinity of Quincy, Massachusetts (near what was previously known as the South Shore) which is geographically south of Jamaica Plains on the game map.

The expansion adds two new areas to the game — Vault 88 which is where the events take place – and the University Point Pharmacy, which is a secret entrance/exit for the Vault. The expansion adds a number of new characters with whom the player will interact, and includes a fairly complex mission and quest set that also adds to the established story in the game.

For the most part game play in the expansion involves the player completing various quests and missions that are divided between story-related tasks and exploration and discovery related ones. Ultimately using Control Boards that are discovered while completing the various core missions for the expansion.

The player will restore power and control to critical sections of the construction site that was intended to be the home for Vault 88 and, to the degree that they desire to, complete the construction of Vault 88, potentially turning it into a life-saving refuge for the overland population who for the first time in the history of the series have an opportunity to become Vault Dwellers en masse.

While exploration and population management and expansion make up the bulk of the mission structure in the expansion, in terms of quests we are treated to a series that involve some rather sinister experiments under the auspices of the original Vault Overseer – who became a ghoul during the original bombing and is thus still with us!

These experiments range in testing hardware to testing concepts and theories in psychology, and the presence of these quests helps to illustrate the rather unique original function that Vault 88 was intended to serve – which is to test out hardware, devices, and dweller policies – but that goal failed when the bombs arrived far earlier than Vault-Tec had anticipated.

Biding her time and refining her plans for the experiments pmay actually have been the only thing that allowed Vault Overseer Valery Barstow to retain her sanity after she was basically trapped in one of the Workshops in the heart of the completed section of the Vault hundreds of years before we arrived.

Due to the fact that Vault 88 was never activated, there are cases of supplies there that include Vault 88 Jumpsuits AND Pip-Boys! While you can give both to the Dwellers you recruit – bear in mind that you can ALSO give Pip-Boys to your humanoid companions back at your settlements – and while it is not clear at this point just how much of an advantage that a companion can obtain from having and using a Pip-Boy, that would have to be something favorable to do – and who knows what the future will bring if they are modifiable?

One of the very desirable elements of this expansion is that it adds the schematics for brand new furniture and other objects and decorations that you can also use for your own buildings in your Settlements. That means you can have nice new beds, furniture, and the like and how cool is that? It certainly expands the options for creating themes and your own living quarters.

Unfortunately while the Workshop allows you to complete Vault 88 – building all sorts of structures – as far as we can tell it does NOT allow you to carve out new Vaults elsewhere below ground. It does introduce a Vault Management Console that you can actually use at Settlements as well though, and some other new devices like the Barber and Surgery Chairs and Slot Machines to name a few

All in all from a game play perspective, the Vault-Tec Workshop provides a mixture of story expansion content and construction capabilities – and when you have completed the story elements still offers a nice expansion to the objects and items that you can craft, making it one of the more useful of the expansions in those terms.

While it is fair to say that the new objects that this expansion introduces – and not just the building objects for completing the Vault mind you – are the central focus for this DLC, one thing that I can say is a stand-out feature is the newness of everything!

Prior to the release of the Vault-Tec Workshop if we wanted to live in and seek the comforts of new and unspoiled quarters it meant spending time at The Institute. Well that is no longer the case – because now we can have new-like living quarters in our own Settlements
